If
you think you'd like to become a balloon pilot and your in South
Africa then here's some good news.
As
long as we don't have any commercial flights on and if you bring
your balloon to us then training will always be free of charge with
Airborne Adventure Africa. The pioneer balloon club in Joburg has
equipment available!!
I am a class II instructor in South Africa so am
able to sign off overseas validation flights as well as instruct
local pilots.
But........
once I have time I will prepare an exam based on the following
documents.
Lindstrand
Flight Manual
Lindstrand
Maintenance Manual
Then there will be a simple exam to make sure you have some of the
terms in your head before we start.
If
you are considering learning to fly balloons then its well worth
looking at those manuals, they are free after all.
If
your still interested and think you might like a balloon of your own
then visit this site
http://www.zebedeelist.co.uk
Its
where the world goes to buy second hand balloons. Balloons are
refered to as 77 or 180 on the list, this refers to the number of
thousand cubic foot volume they are. It takes about 18,000 cu ft to
lift a person at sea level. In Europe a 77 or 77,000 cu ft is a good
4 person balloon. Now as your launch site gets higher you'll need a
bigger balloon to lift the same number so look for a 105 to 120 for
operating in the Highveld.
If
you see something you like, just ask for advice and I'll give you
it.
